Auschwitz death total revised

The memorial stone at the site of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp, which gives the total of victims as four million has been removed.
The move follows Polish research (...). The research was undertaken by Dr. Franciszek Piper, director of the historical department at the Auschwitz Museum, and was published last month in the Solidarity newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza . Thearticle will soon appear in Hebrew and English in a Yad Vashem publication. Yad Yashem officials stress that the figure of four million had never been accepted by serious scholars. They stress, however, that between 85 and 90 per cent of the victims were Jews.
An international conference in Poland to discuss the
matter hasbeen scheduled for November. Yad Vashem will be represented by Prof. Israel Gutman and Dr. Shmuel Krakowski.
